UPGRADING OF VILLAGE IRRIGATION SYSTEMS IN KUMBUK WEWA AND ETHABANDI WEWA CASCADES IN TRINCOMALEE DISTRICTS

Funding Source and Objective

Green Climate Fund (GCF) is the funding source aimed at strengthening the resilience of smallholder farmers in the Dry Zone to climate variability and extreme events. The Project will directly benefit 750,000 people living in the three river basins; Mi Oya, Malwathu Oya and Yan Oya, directly through investments in irrigation, drinking water and disaster risk management and further 770,000 people with indirect benefits from the project interventions in capacities and early warning systems. The project period is 07- year project from 2017 to 2024.

Contract Objective

Rehabilitation and improvement of the Kumbuk Wewa cascade system is located in Gomarankadawala divisional secretariat area in Trincomalee district which consists 17 minor irrigation tanks and the Ethabendi Wewa cascade system is located in Morawewa divisional secratariat area in Trincomalee district which consists 18 minor irrigation tanks and 8 anicut schemes

Final Out Put

Final achievement of this project is to rehabilitate the irrigation system for its operational sustainability considering as whole cascade and restore the cascade ecosystem with enhanced biodiversity to provide adequate and good quality water for all needs of the community.
