The agreement was signed December 2016 in Colombo.
To understand the concrete opportunity of water resources and irrigation development in the country, Ministry of Mahawali Development and Environment together with the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources Management called for this project Strategic Environment Assessment into action to address a critical issue of an effective and well-coordinated water resources management and irrigation planning to avoid un-necessary delays in implementation in the process.
The consultancy firm is responsible in describing, identifying and assessing the likely significant effects on the environment of implementing the proposed water resources & irrigation plan. Providing decision makers with relevant information (qualitative and quantitative) to assess the adequacy of environmental consideration when supporting the implementation of the plan/program. Assess the degree to which the proposed plan/program addresses the major environmental sustainability challenges in the sector. Make recommendations for positive adjustments, adequacy of institutional structure and capacities at the national & local level as well as of the regulatory framework, to address key environmental concerns associated with the proposed plan/program. Prioritization of the proposed water development projects based on the social, economic and environment impacts.
The initial project period was for 6 months starting from the date of signing of the contract. At present 95% of the work has been completed on this assignment.
